I went to Kings Cross, Sydney to find adventure after parenthood, a second crack at life. And I went to write.
I found my muse everywhere, lives pushed into the margins, human beings subsisting on illegal substances and the pastimes needed to fund their supply. The place pulsed. I felt alive. I also found my own wounds. I saw my wreckage reflected in a thousand damaged mirrors that inhabited the streets. And I kept on, refusing to look away. Becoming witness and participant and writing it all down ...
Brining my authentic self to the page in my first memoir, Darling Humans, required more courage than I knew I had. I worried: What would people think? What would the fallout be?
Gradually, I came to know that I needed to be a foot soldier for my own truth, that my freedom lay in showing my face to the world. At last.
Like many of my era, I was brought up to hide the dirty linen. My memoir exists as my utter rejection of that ethos.
My hope is that readers will find inspiration in my uncovering and the strength to bring their own stories into the world.
